A wick – even a wooden wick – must be shortened before each new burn. If you don’t, the flame becomes too large, causing the fragrance to dissipate and smoke (soot) to form. Moreover, the candle will be used up more quickly. But trimming the wick in a jar with ordinary scissors is just about impossible after several burns.
