We are a Belgian team: Bart, Magali and Kristof. Plus Susantha, our highly valued collaborator in Sri Lanka. We didn’t come up with the name Atelier Araliya overnight. In Sri Lanka, the blossom of the temple or frangipani tree is called araliya.
Sri Lankans regard these dainty white-and-yellow flowers as sacred. In the temple, they offer araliyas to Buddha. Consequently, its fragrance is divine. We have known this for a long time, as Sri Lanka is our favorite vacation country. We are staying there at Villa Golden, right on the Indian Ocean and near the historic city of Galle.(www.villagolden.com)
In the villa’s lush garden is a constantly blooming temple tree. A flower of it is often placed on the pillow before putting you to sleep. A thoughtful gesture that we fully appreciate each time .
When we were talking in Sri Lanka about that extraordinary araliya smell, – ping! – an idea popped up in our minds. ‘We should take that fragrance back to Belgium. So that we can also smell that aroma at home and relive the Sri Lankan atmosphere.’
Aha, making scented candles!
A tight plan. We took professional training in scented candle making. And we then set about experimenting enthusiastically. Finally we had – hurrah! – the very best formula for putting the delicate scent of the araliya into candle form.
Not much later, there was the idea of letting other people enjoy what we find so blissful.
So, marketing our candles – as well as diffusers, wax melts and fragrance oils: why not? Not only with the aroma of the temple tree blossom but also with other sublime perfumes.
And voila, that’s how Atelier Araliya was born.
The pots in which we pour our candles are handmade with care and a sense of aesthetics in a Sri Lankan family-run business not far from the capital, Colombo.
Our hollowed-out half coconuts also come from Sri Lanka. There they are polished, and treated appropriately. To safely serve as candle holders.
Everything is shipped to Brussels, where we then hand pour the candles. With all-natural eco-friendly waxes (soy and coconut) of premium quality. Of course, the same goes for our wax melts.
So at Atelier Araliya, we don’t use kerosene, we don’t use palm oil. And of course nothing that could possibly be toxic either. We do everything with great respect for nature, people and animals.
You may notice: we are proud of our Atelier Araliya products. And we hope you enjoy them as intensely as we do.
In the meantime, we continue to work enthusiastically. We are constantly discussing new ideas, both in terms of the design of candle holders and fragrances.
In this way, we want to bring a unique, sophisticated luxury atmosphere into your home time and time again.
Because that is now our goal, our “sacred” mission.
